Windows

High-performance windows engineered for the British climate — secure, energy-efficient and built to last for decades.

The Frame

Leaded Windows

Leaded windows are defined by small panes of glass joined together with decorative lead strips, forming intricate diamond, rectangular or bespoke patterns. They're the unmistakable signature of Tudor, Arts and Crafts, mock-Tudor and many traditional cottage homes — adding a level of detail and craftsmanship no other window style can match.

Why It Matters

Old-World Detail, Modern Comfort

Today's leaded windows preserve all that historic character while incorporating modern double-glazed sealed units. The leaded pattern can be applied to the surface of the glass (giving the appearance of leading without the cold spots) or built into the sealed unit itself for a more authentic period look. Available in any of our window materials and frame styles.

Leaded Windows — common questions

Two options — surface-applied leading (lead strips bonded to both sides of a sealed double-glazed unit) gives the look of leading with full thermal performance and easy cleaning. Built-in leading (separate small panes joined inside the unit) gives the most authentic three-dimensional look but is more expensive.
Generally yes — leaded windows are most authentic on Tudor, Arts and Crafts, cottage or mock-Tudor properties. On modern homes they can look forced, although a small leaded feature window above an entrance is sometimes used to add a traditional accent.
Yes — surface-applied leaded windows use a standard double-glazed sealed unit underneath, so thermal performance is identical to a plain casement. Built-in leaded units perform marginally less well due to the smaller pane sizes, but the difference is minimal.
Yes — beyond the standard diamond and rectangular patterns, we can produce bespoke designs including stained-glass accents, motifs and family crests. Lead-light specialists provide the artwork; we incorporate it into modern double-glazed units.
Modern leading is treated to resist corrosion and oxidisation, so it stays looking smart for decades. Original Victorian and Tudor leading often patinated to a darker grey over time — this can be reproduced if you want a more authentic aged look.
Often, yes — particularly on Tudor, Arts and Crafts or cottage-style properties. We'll check planning specifics and recommend either built-in or surface-applied leading depending on the level of authenticity required.
