Glass & Glazing

Specialist glass and glazing systems engineered for performance — warmer rooms, quieter homes, safer openings and lower bills, year after year.

The Glass

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is made from two or more panes of glass bonded together with a tough plastic interlayer (typically PVB or SentryGlas). If the glass is broken — by impact, accident or attempted forced entry — the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer rather than falling away, keeping the opening sealed and dramatically reducing the risk of injury.

Stays Together, Even When Broken
Why It Matters

Stays Together, Even When Broken

It's the standard specification for safety-critical locations (low-level glazing, doors, balustrades, overhead glass) and the smart choice for ground-floor windows, French doors and any opening where security or sound reduction matters. The interlayer also blocks 99% of UV radiation and noticeably reduces external noise compared to standard glazing.

  • Holds together when broken — safer & more secure
  • Acoustic interlayers reduce external noise
  • Blocks 99% of UV radiation
  • Meets UK safety glazing standards (BS EN 12600)
  • Ideal for doors, balustrades & low-level glazing
  • Can be combined with toughened or Low-E units

Safety First, Insulation By Pairing

Laminated glass doesn't have an inherent U-value advantage on its own — it's specified for safety, security and sound. To get an energy rating, it's combined into a double or triple-glazed sealed unit, where it performs in line with standard insulating glass.

How To Verify

Ask your installer for the U-value of the complete sealed unit (not the laminated pane alone), and check the BFRC rating on the finished window. Look for a 'class 1B1' or higher rating on the laminated pane itself for safety performance.

Laminated Glass — common questions

Both are safety glasses, but they work differently. Toughened glass is heat-treated to be much stronger, and when broken shatters into small blunt fragments. Laminated glass is bonded with a plastic interlayer that holds the pane together if broken. Laminated is generally better for security; toughened is often used where strength alone is the priority.
Nothing is truly burglar-proof, but laminated glass is one of the strongest deterrents — the interlayer means even a heavy impact won't create a clear opening. Anti-bandit and security-rated laminated specifications are available where extra protection is required.
Standard laminated glass reduces external noise by about 3-5 dB more than standard glass. Acoustic laminated glass (with a thicker, specially formulated interlayer) can reduce noise by 10+ dB — a dramatic improvement for homes near busy roads, railways or flight paths.
In certain locations, yes — Part K of the UK Building Regulations requires safety glazing in 'critical locations' like doors, windows below 800mm and glass adjacent to doors. Laminated glass is one of the accepted specifications; toughened is the other. We'll spec the right type for each opening.
No — laminated glass looks identical to standard glass once installed. The interlayer is virtually invisible. You'll only see the difference if the pane is ever broken.
Yes — it's most commonly used as one or both panes of an insulated sealed unit, giving you safety, security and energy efficiency in a single product. We'll spec a combined unit at survey based on the location and your priorities.
