The Option

Roof Lanterns

A roof lantern is a glazed, raised structure set into a flat or solid roof, designed to draw daylight deep into the room below. Slim sightlines, clean ridge lines and high-spec glazing make it a striking architectural feature — and an instant upgrade to any open-plan space.

Roof Lanterns — common questions

Anywhere you want more overhead light — kitchens, dining rooms, orangeries and flat-roof extensions are the most popular. We'll advise on size and position to make the most of the space.
No — modern lanterns use solar-control glass that reflects excess heat in summer while still letting daylight through. Combined with high-performance seals, the room stays comfortable year-round.
Very little. The aluminium frames are powder-coated for long life, and self-cleaning glass uses rainwater to wash dirt away naturally. An occasional check of the seals is all that's needed.
Yes — most flat-roof extensions and orangeries can take a retrofitted lantern. We survey the structure to confirm it can support the weight and make a weathertight cut-out, then fit the lantern with fully sealed flashing.
As a rule of thumb, the lantern should sit comfortably within the roof area without overpowering it — typically covering around a third to a half of the flat roof. We'll recommend a size and pitch that suit your room proportions and ceiling height.
Yes. Electric or remote-operated opening vents can be built into the lantern for natural ventilation and heat release in summer — ideal above kitchens and dining areas.
